Anecdote* | 1924 | Captain Leonard Durnford Pinckney O.B.E. of the P. and O. steamship Mantua, died suddenly at Port Said on October 23 at the age of 55. He was the second son of John Pinckney, of the Manor House, Great Durnford, and was eductade at Dr. Burney's at Gosport and in the training ship Conway. In August 1914, when in command of the Somali, he took troops to India and back, and then took troops to Gallipoli. Later, when the Somali was fitted in Malta as a hospital ship, he was engaged all through the campaign in conveying wounded from Gallipoli to Malta and Alexandria. He was present at both evacuations, and finally brought wounded to England. Captain Pinckney was then transferred to the P. and O. steamship Khyber, and took troops twice to Montreal and back, and after the Armistice he was for six months in the North Sea taking Belgians from Hull to Antwerp and bringing back English prisoners of war from Rotterdam to Hull. |
