Other Information

Anecdote*To my mind Robert was a bit of a character.

In 1901 when he was only 17 he enlisted in the 7th Batallion of the Royal Fusiliers and in 1902 was transferred to the Middlesex Regiment. I can find nothing else about this period in the Army but we know that he had left and was a Fishmonger by 1907 when he married Alice.

In 1914 he did his duty and enlisted as a Gunner in the Royal Garrison Artillery. However, army life apparently did not seem to suit him this time, he deserted in 1915.

For whatever reason Robert tried again in 1916, this time he enlisted in the Army Services Corp. However, this was an even shorter attempt than the previous one and he deserted again later on in 1916.

Finally Robert found his place. He enlisted in the Merchant Navy in 1918 and so far as I can make out he stayed there for the duration of the war and beyond.

Robert's poor wife Alice was apparently not very happy with him. During one of his absences the Army wrote to her to see if she knew where he was. She replied that she didn't and didn't want to have anything to do with him.

They must have separated at some time after 1919 when their daughter Alice Maud was born but apparently they did not divorce.

Robert and his new 'wife' Florence were living as man and wife in 1939. But it wasn't until his first wife Alice died in 1958 were they legally allowed to marry in 1959.

Never a dull moment with Robert.
